The Forum's 17th Annual Conference will address the intricate and constantly-changing interrelation between the many aspects of the housing and community development industry and how a crisis in one sector causes turmoil in others. Recent events in financial markets are tied to the crisis in the subprime lending market, which is manifested in the crisis for families facing foreclosure. These developments in turn are now creating difficulties in the housing tax credit market. All of these developments are occurring amidst the backdrop of the presidential election. Hundreds of attorneys and other professionals from the private sector, government, nonprofits and academia will meet in Washington, D.C., to analyze the problems in the industry and solutions that provide hope for the future.
Highlights of the conference will include an address by Congressman Barney Frank (D-MA), and a special workshop to be held at HUD headquarters discussing how HUD programs interact with tax credit deals.
The Conference will include its well-established tracks on tax credit financing and HUD programs with traditional sessions like "Tax Credit Hot Topics" and "Heard from HUD," as well as the long-running track for beginning lawyers, with all programs qualifying for CLE credit. The Conference will also include an innovative session on the impact of the subprime crisis on families and neighborhoods, a workshop on the nation's crumbling infrastructure and its impact on housing community development, and a discussion devoted to the up-to-the minute status of Congressional action on housing and community development issues (including
HOPE VI, the proposed Housing Trust Fund, changes to the tax credit programs, and legislation dealing with homelessness.) The Conference will also include a panel on ethics, building on the success of the session on ethics from our mid-year conference in New Orleans.
